Spring and fall bestGold Medal water

In 2014 Colorado named 102 miles of the Arkansas Gold Medal water, from the Lake Fork confluence near Leadville down to the US 50 bridge at Parkdale. That's one of the longest Gold Medal stretches in the state, and it runs right past our door.

  • Spring before runoff: the caddis hatch in April and early May is the one people plan trips around.
  • Summer: fish early and late, and give rafts room in Browns Canyon at midday.
  • Fall: lower, clearer water and fewer boats. October is quiet and beautiful.
  • Easy access: AHRA sites along US 285 and US 50 put you on the water in minutes.

Know before you go

  • Anyone 16 or older needs a Colorado fishing license.
  • Some stretches carry special regulations. Check the CPW fishing brochure for the section you fish.
  • AHRA sites need a park pass.
