The valley's best-kept secret is that the climbing is good in January. The granite north of Buena Vista faces south and bakes in the winter sun, and Shelf Road's limestone hits its prime when the high country is buried.
- Buena Vista granite, CR 371: about 3 miles north of Main Street past the old railroad tunnels. Bob's Rock is a 75-foot wall of mostly sport and mixed routes in the 5.9 to 5.11 range. Elephant Rock is a roadside formation with cracks and faces. Turtle Rocks has 20+ sport and trad routes. Bring a small rack.
- Shelf Road: north of Cañon City, about an hour and a half from Salida. Vertical limestone with well over a thousand mostly bolted routes. Camp at Sand Gulch or The Bank, both reservable on Recreation.gov. Bring your own firewood.
- Penitente Canyon: a road trip into the San Luis Valley, 1.5 to 2 hours south. 300+ bolted routes on featured volcanic rock.
Know before you go
- Some Bob's Rock routes close for nesting raptors until July 15. Respect the signs.
- Shelf Road is BLM land with fees at the campgrounds.
- Summer afternoons are hot on south-facing rock. Climb early or chase shade.
