Salida's trails don't shut down when it gets cold. Here's how to layer, what traction to use, and how to keep running through winter in the Arkansas Valley.
Try Before You Buy: Backcountry Ski and Splitboard Demos in Salida
Not sure which touring setup is right for you? Rent a full AT, telemark or splitboard package from our Salida shop and test it on real snow.
Backcountry gear is a big investment. Skis, bindings, boots and skins add up fast, and the right setup depends on how you ski, where you tour and how much climbing you plan to do. Our demo and rental program lets you try before you commit.
What's in a package
AT and telemark ski and boot packages are $100 a day, and so is our splitboard package. Our AT demos include the Black Crows Navis Freebird and Dynafit Tigard 97, our tele demo is the Voile Vector Ace, and riders can demo the Jones Howler splitboard in men's and women's sizes. Skins are $20 a day, and shovels and probes are $10 a day each.
Who demos are for
• First-time tourers who want to see if they like skinning before buying a full kit.
• Resort skiers moving into the backcountry and figuring out what width and weight feels right.
• Visitors passing through Salida who don't want to haul gear across the country.
• Splitboarders testing a new board shape or binding system.
Tips for your demo day
• Reserve early. Weekends, holidays and powder days book up fast. Call (719) 539-4400.
• Pick up the evening before. Grab your gear after 5pm the night before and return it by 11am the morning after at no extra charge.
• Practice transitions in the parking lot before you head uphill.
• Avalanche gear is a must in the backcountry. Make sure your party has a beacon, shovel and probe and knows how to use them.
Put the rental toward a purchase
One day of rental can be credited toward a purchase, so your demo day can help pay for your new setup.
